Demonstrators

One of the deliverables for this project is practical demonstrations of the technologies we envisage will be part of the roadmap for clinical decision support.

There are three demos intended for this project. They all build upon a single case study scenario but in different ways. This scenario has been used because

  • members of the project have previously demonstrated software for this scenario and established it's clinical benefit
  • the scenario explicitly involves multiple roles which allows us to explore modularising the clinical support around those roles - a key building block in showing the flexibility and scalability of a decentralised platform.
  • The services that are required are typical of those required in many clinical settings in acute and chronic conditions.

Demo 1 - Centralised Triple Assessment

This demonstration adapts the software that has previously been used to demonstrate the clinical benefit of a system based on PROforma but clearly distinguishes the roles that are expressed within the original monolithic guideline.

Three video walk-throughs have been prepared to illustrate this demo.

The first video introduces the clinical scenario and the web application that is used to deliver the clinical support. The second and third videos demonstrate different elements of the clinical support.

This demo is called the "centralised" demo because all users would be interacting with a single centralised server. So when we use the term "centralised" we are referring to the architecture used for delivering the decision support service (the single server or endpoint on the world wide web), not the distribution of the users.

Demo 2 - Distributed Triple Assessment

This demo will show the results of merging Oxford's Tallis platform and Edinburgh's Open Knowledge platform. Open Knowledge provides the capacity to facilitate truly distributed guidelines (where the care team associated with a patient may be using different decision support systems for different elements of the application).

Demo 3 - extended Triple Assessment

The second pair of demos is based on an extended clinical scenario which includes some additional roles (e.g. patients, researchers). This was motivated by the observation that the first 2 demos were entirely focused on the hospital while many of the real benefits of our technology arise because it makes it possible for doctors and patients to access external knowledge resources, decision support, and research and other services.
